First Snow Magic
Interview and commissioned work for Orlando Tales
You have created a special recipe and pictures for Orlando. Could you tell us what inspired you?
“ This project was for the December issue, with a theme inspired by Pandora’s Box. While Pandora's Box is often associated with the release of chaos and trouble, it can also have a surprisingly hopeful interpretation. In the myth, after all the troubles escaped, hope remained in the box, suggesting that even in the darkest times, hope endures as a source of resilience. This concept made me think of winter's first snow - a magical, hopeful moment.
In Korea, there’s a superstition that if you witness the first snowfall of the season with someone special, love will blossom. Outside of Korea, the first snow remains special as it brings back nostalgic memories of a happy, carefree childhood for a lot of people. Like the first bloom of spring, the first snow brings a sense of hope and excitement, lighting up the dark and gray days, especially during European winters, which are often overcast and somber. With this inspiration, I set out to create a recipe that could encapsulate this magical moment. I made snowflake meringues - light, airy, delicate, and melting in your mouth like the snowflakes we tried to catch with your tongue when we were children. I served them with double cream, drawing on the classic Swiss dessert, Meringues à la double crème, a sweet treat from the ultimate winter wonderland. ”
